The Novels in the Evenings in Klaipėda are organized by the Klaipėda branch of the Lithuanian Writers Union. The idea of the event belongs to the chairman of the branch prosaist Rimantas Černiauskas. In 2003 the Novels in the Evenings took place for the 16th time. Already for 10 years it has been an international event. 10-12 participants come from Germany, Russia (and always from the Kaliningrad Region where prosaists are really strong), Latvia, Poland, Estonia, Kaunas and Vilnius. Lately 2-days readings take place in the I. Simonaitytė library reading room. Several times additional novel readings in Kretinga were organized by Algis Kuklys. Now already for 3 years the Novels in the Evenings has been taking place in Thomas Mann house in Nida. It is intended to organize the Novels in the Evenings in Gargždai as well.
It is a shame that the Ministry of Culture of Lithuania does not support the event. But at least the money provided by the local government of Klaipėda is enough to pay for the writers traveling and accommodation expenses. Of course, every year it is necessary to prepare a request and provide recommendations. The received sum is not regular, therefore the organizers cannot invite famous novelist even from Europe…
However, Rimantas Černiauskas has new ideas and strong ambitions. He intends to continue the Novels in the Evenings not only with traditional readings. Together with Klaipėda University Literary Cathedral R. Černiauskas will try to organize conferences on theory as well.
