International theatre festival "New Drama Action"

8th NEW DRAMA ACTION 2006

The 8th international new dramaturgy and theatre festival NEW DRAMA ACTION on 26th April – 28th May
presenting the programme "Platform of new theatrical ideas".
One of the most urgent, as well as problematic, means of making contemporary theatre is related with collaboration of artists from different countries. The popularisation of international projects has given rise to the necessity to search for the means of putting them into life, based on the criteria of creative motivation and long-term partnership. It is impossible to find them without the interest coming from theatre artists themselves, which is the only factor justifying the models of international support and coproduction. There are no rules here, and each case is unique.
One of the leaders of contemporary European theatre, Hungarian director Árpád Schilling, and the actors of his theatre Krétakör are going to use their Lithuanian peers "for their personal progress", and hope that the Lithuanians will use them in the same way as well. In the words of Schilling, he finds it "more important to create moments of common joy than to express his visions", and in the Vilnius meeting he hopes to "better realise the value of these moments" during ten days of joint work with a group of Lithuanian actors. The Finn Kristian Smeds arrived in Lithuania with a crazy idea – to make a performance based on Dostoyevskys Crime and Punishment with one actress. The wish to make it in Lithuania was born out of love and respect for Lithuanian theatre. Smeds himself is writing the play and rehearsing it together with actress Aldona Bendoriūtė. They are separated by the language barrier and different experiences, but according to Smeds, they are "walking the artistic way together with mainly the same kind of feelings and thoughts". Their show Sad Songs from the Heart of Europe will be an unusual and very personal chamber dialogue with the audience about the conflicts of hopes, ideals and reality of the contemporary individual.
Contemporary dramaturgy in this country is most often associated with a play. With the aim of expanding and actualising the concept of dramaturgy, it is important to look for different ways of creating it. One of the godfathers of contemporary dramaturgy, British playwright Mark Ravenhill has made his acting debut in the production of his newest play. His Product can be regarded not only as a satire on market-generated social stereotypes, but also as a self-ironical look at his own brand. The German René Pollesch has a different concept of new dramaturgy – he encourages the actors themselves to create the dramaturgy of the performance. While actualising contemporary society, Pollesch erases the boundaries between popular culture, social studies and the actors personal experience. Cezaris Graužinis with his group of actors has chosen a similar way of collective work. Their idea to make a documentary performance Lithuanias Day about a non-existent Lithuania also reveals a different artistic attitude to this urgent theme. The collaboration of writer Sigitas Parulskis and director Agnius Jankevičius in creating the play Ferryman is a rare example in our theatre. This play has just started developing into a performance. And the way of creating dramaturgy used by Kristian Smeds and his partners from the group of independent artists Houkat Bros in the show Wanderer of their "table theatre" is definitely totally new here.
The 8th edition of the New Drama Action is seeking to remain a forge of new theatrical ideas.
