Gavelis Ričardas prose writer, playwright, publicist.
Was born in Vilnius, on Nowember 8, 1950. Died on August 18, 2002.
In 1973 he finished studies of physics at Vilnius University. In 1973-1977 he worked at an Institute of Physics at Academy of Science, in 1978-1980 – at editorial offices of magazines Mokslas ir gyvenimas and Pergalė (in 1980-1982). In 1992-2002 he cooperated with a daily Respublika, and a weekly Veidas.

Having debuted with short stories in the middle of the 8th decade (in a magazine Nemunas and other), later R. Gavelis wrote plays, stories, novels, essay and publicistical articles. He is one of the most distinct representatives of the modern and post modern Lithuanian prose. In his creation a constructive – rational springs are important: in composition of short stories and novels, plots, characters there are much analysis and metaphorical meanings.
In a prose by R. Gavelis, critics and interpretators find many distinct signs of the post modern literature: mystery of being, relativity of good, beauty and truth, logical inversions of reality and dream, critique of the traditional cultural values, "quotations", play of all historically established means of the literary expressions.
R. Gavelis prose is one of the most interesting and bravest forms of social criticism in the Lithuanian literature. He questions national, historical, political and religious values, stops time with a way of the literary mythologization, changes dimensions of the social space. The analytical, phantasmagorian, paradoxical and metaphorical style of the author already under conditions of the Soviet censorship opened new ways for such criticism. The performed "surgery of the Soviet metastases" in The Vilnius Poker (Vilniaus pokeris) (1989) according to A. Kalėda, shocked and attract readers. The inner monologues of characters according to principles of counterpoint and other introduce to a reader a many-faced world.
R. Gavelis essays and publicistical articles are designed to very acute daily topicalities that also are being critically assessed. As in his all creations, the author tries to work off provincialism, intervene in a worldwide context of philosophy, literature and policy.
