Bradūnas Kazys, poet.
Was born in Vilkaviškis, on February 11, 1917. Died in Vilnius on February 9, 2009.
After finishing gymnasium of the literary traditions at Vilkaviškis, he studied the Lithuanian language and literature at Kaunas and Vilnius Universities. In 1944 he moved from Lithuania, in 1949 – left for the USA. He lived in Baltimor and Chicago, worked various jobs, later – edited Literatūros lankai, Aidai and cultural appendix of Draugas. He is one of the most active culture workers, books compilers and editors in the emigration. He edited Poesy (Poezija) (1961) by V. Mačernis, a book of critique The Lithuanian Literature Abroad 1945 – 1967 (Lietuvių literatūra svetur, 1945 – 1967) (1968). He is one of compilers and editors of The Lithuanian Exodus Literature 1940 – 1990 (Lietuvių egzodo literatūra 1940 – 1990" (1992). Since 1995 he has returned to Lithuanian with his wife Kazimiera and lives in Vilnius.
Since 1994 – the member of LWU.

Critics’ word:
He started writing poems when he attended gymnasium. His poems were published in Ateities spinduliai, and Ateitis. During his studies, he participated at activity of Šatrija rally, distinguished for his consequent Christian world-view, affinity to ideals of Ateitininkai. In Lithuanian, there were published two collections of poems: The Bells of Vilnius (Vilniaus varpai) (1943) and Footmarks in Plough (Pėdos arimuose) (1944). A culture of agriculture and its experience is expressed with a manner that is close to the neoromantic stylistics. Living in the emigration (the earlier collections The Borrowed Bread (Svetimoji duona), Plague (Maras), Ritual (Apeigos) links of the Christianity and nature worship world-view become stronger, as well as the ritual style. A peculiar deflection in Bradūnas consequent way was Literatūros lankai that manifested a new position of young culture workers of the emigration and that was concretized by an anthology Earth (Žemė) (1951), edited by Bradūnas as well. He is a representative of land – meadow generation and its creative dimensions, a creator and a mouthpiece of the earth notional code. Approximately from Earth (Žemė) divide, a mythical seam is more distinct at Bradūnas creation. He more peculiar leans upon folklore, there are deeper historical exposures. There also are more various poetical forms (address, discussion, and letters). The 6th-8th decades were intensive. At this time, the most valuable poesy of Bradūnas was created. Its peak: Fires of Moraines (Morenų ugnys) and The Silver Curb (Sidabrinės kamanos). In the poems of these collections a level of the Bradūnas poetry was created that is comprised of a free obligation to the native culture, its history and the present of the speaking one (or saying), flexibility of the folklore and mythical means, expressive speech and a lucid structure of a poem. In An Inn by a Road to Vilnius (Užeiga prie Vilniaus vieškelio) (1981), the poet intertextually uses fragments from The Chronicles of the Lithuanian Catholic Church (Lietuvių Katalikų Bažnyčios kronikos). For the poet, it is an echo of the important resistant topic. The poesy of Bradūnas expands from the beginning of the ninth decade. It includes more topics, but does not deepen anymore. The poesy takes a shade of a peculiar postscript, comment (Postscripts (Prierašai), 1983).
