The renaissance of a short story genre during the Soviet period (the 7th-8th decades) is linked with the name of J. Aputis. A modern form of a short story, delicate psychology, originality of temper and situation, plenty of associative images, lyric world-view, the essay stylistics, harmony of daily life and the deep structures of reality in shorts stories by J. Aputis was a new and very interesting direction of searches for a reader. According to a literary critic J. Sprindytė, "Lively touching a thought and heart, Aputis is one of the most distinctive and deepest representatives in depicting the countryside life structure". Already in the early works by J. Aputis one can feel a strong basis of autobiography, world-view of a native land and close people. All characters of J. Aputis, regardless of their age, background and profession, are being led by mystery of existence, laws of universality of the living completeness and the existential disquiet. The creative principles, that sprang in short stories writing, later were developed in the larger genres of prose – stories and a novel There is no Stop at Sands… (Smėlynuose sustoti negalima…). A story An Anthill in Prussia (Skruzdėlynas Prūsijoje) (written in 1971, published in 1989) takes an exclusive place in Aputis creation. In this story, the author invokes a conditional (allegorical, symbolical, metaphorical) form, notably strengthens issues of history, an individual freedom and stand against violence that appeared in an interface of rationality and irrationality.
J. Aputis had translated prose by V. Bykov, A. Chekhov, V. Shukshin, D. Grigorowich, J. Trifonov and others.
