Vytautas Martinkus – prose writer, literary scholar.
He was born 28 May, 1943 in Jerubiškiai, Jurbarkas district.
In 1960 he finished Eržvilkas Secondary school. In 1965 he finished his studies at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute and acquired a specialty of an engineer – electrician. In 1971-1974 he studied at Philosophy, Law and Sociology Department and got his Doctoral degree in 1981 at Vilnius Uniersity. He worked as an electrician (1960-1962), as a technician – engineer (1966-1971). In 1974-1982 he was an accountable secretary at LSSR Writers’ Union, Kaunas section and from 1986 till 1988 he was a secretary of the board. During the years of 1989-1994 he was the chairman of Lithuanian Writers’ Union. From 1994-2008 he was a docent at Vilnius Pedagogical University and became the head of Lithuanian literature department in 1999. He got a degree of a Professor in 2011. From 1998 till 2012 he was an editor in chief of universities publication “Teksto slėpiniai”. He is a member of editorial boards of “Žmogus ir žodis”, “Santara” and “Varpai”. He is a member of Lithuanian Comparative Literature Association, European Network of Comparative Literatures and Lithuanian Science Academy. His prose has been translated into several foreign languages.
A member of Lithuanian Writers’ Union since 1971.
